My planner is one of those simple ring binder journals you can pick up from any stationery supplies store. White paper. No ruled lines to cage my venturesome handwriting and doodling. I’m an obsessive note-taker and fill pages to the margins with to do lists, rough sketches, and ideas for blog posts. I usually go through one planner every month.

Haley Young Functional Medicine Nutritionist BS Nutrition, Emphasis in Clinical Nutrition & Nutrition Science Haley Young is a Functional Medicine nutritionist with an extensive background in clinical nutrition and working one-on-one with patients and families of all ages. As a graduate of Kansas State University she holds her Bachelor’s in Human Nutrition with an emphasis in clinical nutrition and nutrition science. Haley has worked in various clinical settings to educate adults, children, and community shelters in need to help them change their lives through nutrition therapy. “Over the course of four years working in hospitals, I realized that my work was to manage patients’ symtoms rather than healing them. For instance, in the hospitals we measured tube feedings for critically ill patients. I was counting carbs for diabetics but giving them graham crackers and grilled cheese sandwiches. I was limiting caffeine and salt for cardiac patients but giving them foods like garlic bread, rice pudding, and jell-o. We may have effectively controlled their blood sugar or blood pressure in the moment, but not doing anything for their gut health or inflammation. We weren’t teaching them how to heal and thrive on a metabolic level. Our meals, just like medications, were causing other “side effects” or even worse, leading them towards other long-term chronic problems. I realized you can’t just look at the surface numbers and categorize each patient into a special diet based on that. This realization is what led me to break out of the mold of the dietetic industry… and find Functional Medicine.” At Grapevine Functional Medicine, Haley has been able to help patients heal themselves, get off medications, and improve their blood work through nutrition. In addition to nutrition counseling, education, and developing meal plans Haley customizes her approach for each patient based on their specific blood work. She incorporates meditation, affirmations, mindful eating and many other tools to encourage a healthy, sacred relationship to food. Haley’s approach is focused on dietary and lifestyle modifications with an emphasis on whole, nutrient-dense foods. She uses various diagnostic tools such as specialty labs to evaluate the health of each patient’s gut, food sensitivities, systemic inflammation, autoimmunity and much more to customize a result-oriented program based on each patient’s goals.
